One-time family decision kits
A place is more than a price tag.
Start with the context behind a move: who lives there, housing pressure, parent work patterns, transportation and digital access. Then identify the local questions your family still needs answered.
Check the people, period and boundaries behind each figure.
Use the report and offline worksheet to organize your next local checks.
These are pooled 2020-2024 ACS estimates, not current home prices, child care openings, school ratings or a ranking of the best places for families. Separate tables do not describe the same individual households.

Six questions. Check each population.
What share of households included at least one person under 18?
ACS 2020-2024 five-year estimate, not a current count of families seeking child care or school places. People under 18 include household members other than the householder's own children. The calculated share has no derived margin of error; component 90% margins are included. Small differences do not prove a ranking.
Source population: Households. Original Census B11005 table.
Among own children under 6 in families and subfamilies, what share had all available parents in the labor force?
ACS 2020-2024 five-year estimates. Counts refer to children, not parents or households. Own children in families and subfamilies do not represent all children. Labor force includes employment and unemployment, not just people currently employed; it is not a work-schedule measure. This does not measure child-care enrollment, available places, prices, parental preferences or unmet care need. Component 90 percent margins of error are included; no derived ratio margin or significance test is claimed. Small differences do not establish a ranking.
Source population: Own children under 18 years in families and subfamilies. Original Census B23008 table.
Among owner-occupied homes with a mortgage and a computed cost-to-income ratio, what share had selected monthly owner costs of at least 30 percent of household income?
ACS 2020-2024 five-year estimates. The denominator excludes the source not-computed category. Excluded records are not zero-cost or unburdened homes. Selected monthly owner costs are broader than mortgage payments. This is not current home prices, costs for a prospective buyer, loan eligibility, rental burden or a guarantee of affordability. Component 90 percent margins of error are included; no derived ratio margin or significance test is claimed. Small differences do not establish a ranking.
Source population: Owner-occupied housing units. Original Census B25091 table.
Among households with four or more people, what share had no vehicle available?
2020-2024 ACS five-year estimates, not current conditions. Component 90 percent margins of error are retained; no derived-ratio margin or significance test is claimed. Small point differences do not establish a ranking. The measures cannot identify the same people across tables or prove a cause. Household size does not identify families or the presence of children. Vehicle availability is not ownership, ability to drive, transit service, trip time or proof of transport disadvantage. No-vehicle households may use other modes or choose not to have a vehicle. This is not a current vehicle listing or service directory.
Source population: Households. Original Census B08201 table.
Among people under 18 living in households, what share lived in a household with no computer?
2020-2024 ACS five-year estimates, not current conditions. Component 90 percent margins of error are retained; no derived-ratio margin or significance test is claimed. Small point differences do not establish a ranking. The measures cannot identify the same people across tables or prove a cause. The universe is people in households, not households or all residents including group quarters. The measure describes household computer presence, not personal device ownership, digital skill, connection speed, affordability or access at school, a library or work. It does not identify enrolled students or disability. Census computer definitions can include handheld computers; no-computer is not a desktop-only measure.
Source population: Population in households. Original Census B28005 table.
What share of households reported a broadband internet subscription of any type?
ACS 2020-2024 five-year household estimate. Broadband of any type includes cellular service and is not equivalent to a fixed-line connection. It does not measure speed, affordability or service quality. The calculated share has no derived margin of error; component 90% margins are included. Small differences do not prove a ranking.
Source population: Households. Original Census B28002 table.
Build your next local checks
Housing
Check current rents or purchase costs, insurance, utilities and travel costs. The mortgage-cost share is about owners with computed ratios; it is not a price quote for a home or a renter.
Care, schools and activities
Confirm provider licensing, openings, fees, hours, school boundaries and activity availability directly. These Census estimates do not establish capacity, suitability or an individual child's needs.
Daily routines
Check actual travel times, transit service and internet plans. A large household without a vehicle and a child without a home computer are different source populations, not linked records.
The $10 worksheet stays on your device. You can record priorities and verified local answers without sending family details to us.
Trace the source
Every edition includes the selected original estimate and component margin-of-error fields, source URLs, definitions and package hashes. Percentages are descriptive point estimates. Derived ratio confidence intervals are not supplied, so small apparent differences are not evidence of a statistically meaningful difference.
City boundaries use the 2024 Census place definition. ZIP-area comparisons use 2020 Census ZCTAs, which approximate postal ZIP areas and can overlap cities. Do not sum city and ZIP-area totals.
